The Tom Fowler 'Sound'

Dennismoody
As an engineer, I have been very fortunate to have worked with many of the world's top musicians. They have many different ideas when it comes to getting their particular sound and how they go about recording or getting ready for a gig. For many years I have been working with the legendary bassist, Tom Fowler. Recently, we have been again working on a couple different projects.

Jack Bruce: "Crossroads"

Jack Bruce is one of the largest bass icons in rock. Born in Scotland in 1943, Jack played with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, the Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall's Blues Breakers (where he met Eric Clapton) and Manfred Mann. Jack even turned down an offer to join Marvin Gaye's band! He joined up with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker to form the supergroup, Cream. Cream sold 35,000,000 albums in just over two years and was awarded the first-ever platinum disc for Wheels of Fire. This song, from that album, is their interpretation of the Robert Johnson classic "Crossroads."

Detachment from the Album Carbonne Di Piazza Manring

Yvescarbonnebio1
This is my first column for Bass Musician Magazine, and it's dedicated to my favorite instrument, fretless bass. I started to play fretless in 1982, influenced by Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report's "Heavy Weather") and Alain Caron (Uzeb's "Fast Emotion").

John Patitucci: It’s About How Close You Are to Your Instrument So That You Can Get MUSIC Out

Johnpatitussiapr081
What else can you possibly say about a musician like this that hasn't already been said by fans, "armchair experts", his musical peers and much more informed/credible writers - long before this blurb made its way to the world wide web. Who am I to think that I could possibly add anything valid to these contributions ?? For this reason I would prefer that John's performance in our video speaks for itself and you make your own informed decisions about it.

Hadrien Feraud | "Hadrien Feraud"

Hadrienferaudapr08
If you haven't heard of this guy (kid, really! mid-twenties... yikes!), get out from under the boulder and look him up. He is single handedly raising the bar on technical ability on the electric bass. This kid is FAST! The refreshing thing is that he is also, quite obviously, harmonically deep.

Slapping Some Chords

Dougjohnsbio
Yeah, I agree. It's kind of a weird title. But I guess it's better than getting slapped with a chord; now, that would hurt!

This month, I want to talk about a short little technique that I get asked about a lot: I'm going to explain and show you how I slap/arpeggiate chords.
