When did you decide you wanted to be a plus model?
I was actually approached about being a plus model a few years ago. At the time I was insulted at the notion - who was plus sized here? Certainly not me! I had no idea what being a plus model was all about. The idea stuck in my head. I'd dabbled in all the other aspects of the entertainment industry, and had always been curious about modeling. When did you decide you wanted to be a plus model?

Catherine Schuller, our PLUS Model Magazine industry liaison, has made it her mission to inform, inspire and infuse the spirit of sharing, support and encouragement in all aspects of her work over the years in the plus size industry. Her sense of community, not competition, allows her to be an advocate one day, and a go-to, go-between the next. As a market expert she realizes that although we've come light years from the days of half sizes, muu-muus and polyester jogging suits, we seem to lack resources, positive role models and high caliber visuals to reinforce confidence and self esteem.
When I was first given this assignment I thought it would actually be a breeze to write. As I "googled" "Mannequin Modeling" to get as much information as possible, I quickly realized that I had my work cut out for me because there appeared to be some confusion as to what "Mannequin Modeling" really is. So I put out some feelers to my model friends in the industry and the feedback was truly interesting.
In last month's December issue of PLUS Model Magazine, viewers watched a video clip that challenged stereotypes about the way people scrutinize a three digit-number: WEIGHT. Steadily gaining popularity on You Tube, the clip is fittingly titled, "Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover." In this particular segment on the show, we see a plus-sized Tonya face off in a 60 second fitness challenge against her thinner counterpart, Annette. Each contestant completed a mini-obstacle course, which included the following exercises: a 20 second jog on the treadmill at 5MPH, ten sit ups, five pushups, and two leap-frogs.
We LOVE to share success stories like this!
If you have read the January issue of PLUS Model Magazine, you may remember the ‘Before and After’ interview that our Editor did with aspiring plus model Shanta Washington… in it, we chronicled her first test shoot and showed a bit of the model magic that happens when you work with a great team…
Well, since that interview, Shanta has since been scouted by a NY agency in NY! But that’s not all… she just called us with the big news… The agency that is looking to work with her sent her pictures to Essence Magazine and subsequently she has been booked to appear on the TODAY show!
So tune in to TODAY this Wednesday morning and watch Shanta and other plus size models in the ‘Perfect Fit’ segment. Fashions will feature Abby Z as well as Ashley Stewart and others.
Join us in wishing Shanta a big, curvy congratulations! Be brilliant. Be beautiful.
